PDP’s Damagum Speaks on Alleged Ties to APC, Defends Relationship with Wike

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has denied allegations of working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defended his relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, amid rising internal criticism.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Damagum rejected claims that he is a political tool of the APC, describing the allegations as baseless. He reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to the PDP, recalling his history with the party since 1999 and emphasising that he has never defected.

“May God be the judge between me and whoever slandered me, and may God judge us if I am working for the APC,” he said in response to reports that he held a secret meeting with President Bola Tinubu in the United Kingdom.

Damagum also addressed tensions within the PDP over his association with Wike, a former PDP governor who now serves in the APC-led federal government. While confirming that he knows Wike, Damagum insisted that his relationship with the minister does not amount to betrayal or disloyalty to the party. He argued that many of his critics also have ties to Wike but are using his connection to the minister for political attacks.

“For all those who accuse me of having links with the Minister of FCT, I know him or have had links with him, and many of them have had links with him. My only fault here is that I did not allow them to do what they wanted with him,” he stated.

He expressed regret over the defection of some PDP members to the APC, describing their exit as unfortunate but rejecting claims that they were forced out or treated unfairly. According to Damagum, differences of opinion are natural in any political organisation, but the PDP remains intact and focused.

Despite the criticism, Damagum maintained that his leadership is rooted in party loyalty and a commitment to unity. He urged members to remain steadfast and to resolve differences internally without resorting to public attacks or misinformation.
