PDP Responds to APC’s Impeachment Order Against Gov. Fubara
In a stern message to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rebuked any attempts at a forcible seizure of Rivers State. This declaration came from the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.
The statement was a response to calls by the Rivers State APC Chairman, Mr. Tony Okocha, urging members of the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Similaye Fubara.
Ologunagba emphasized that the lawmakers purportedly instructed to impeach the governor do not hold legal standing, as they forfeited their legislative seats upon resigning from the PDP, the party through which they were elected.
He asserted, “The attention of the leadership of the PDP has been drawn to a delusional declaration by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Mr. Tony Okocha, wherein he issued a hallucinatory directive that an impeachment proceeding be commenced against the democratically elected Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.”
The PDP spokesperson condemned what he described as the APC’s “reckless and unwarranted” actions, which he believes demonstrate a blatant disregard for democratic principles and an attempt to subvert the will of the people.
Furthermore, Ologunagba highlighted the legal framework underpinning the vacating of legislative seats by defectors, citing Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
He urged the Inspector General of Police to take note of the “subversive utterances” made by the Rivers State APC Chairman, warning that such rhetoric could incite crisis and disrupt the democratic order.
In conclusion, the PDP reiterated its commitment to defending the democratic rights of the people of Rivers State and called upon them to resist any attempts by the APC to sow violence and instability in the region.
