PDP Reacts to Supreme Court’s Verdict Upholding Tinubu’s Victory
The Supreme Court has affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 elections, dismissing the appeals made by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. The Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC) had previously upheld Tinubu’s win, a decision that was met with opposition from the opposition parties.
In response to the Supreme Court’s judgment, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed deep disappointment and concern. PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba issued a statement in which the party criticized the court’s reasoning, alleging that it went against the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP argued that the Supreme Court’s decision fell short of the expectations of the majority of Nigerians who viewed it as a beacon of impartiality, entrusted to deliver justice in accordance with the law and the facts of the case. The party accused the court of disregarding serious issues of forgery, falsehood, and perjury in favor of technicalities.
This verdict has left a sense of disillusionment and despair among the populace, eroding confidence in the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court, which is considered the last resort for justice. Despite this setback, the PDP urged Nigerians to remain resolute in their pursuit of a credible electoral system that truly represents the will of the people.
