Passengers Stranded, Flights Cancelled as Labour Unions Picket Abuja Airport

Chaos has erupted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as passengers find themselves stranded due to an ongoing labour union protest. Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have taken action, causing the cancellation of flights bound for Owerri, the capital of Imo state.

The genesis of this unrest can be traced back to a nationwide industrial action initiated by the NLC and TUC, stemming from the assault and brutalization of Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, in Imo last week. Labor unions continue to assert that the governor of Imo, Hope Uzodinma, and the state’s police command were responsible for the attack, a claim both parties have vehemently denied.

On Wednesday, aviation unions such as the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), issued a statement instructing their workers to cease services related to all Owerri-bound flights at airports across Nigeria. This action aligns with the broader directives from the organized labor unions.

Currently, the NLC and TUC protesters have blocked the entry and exit points of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, creating significant disruptions for passengers. Numerous individuals scheduled to depart from the airport today find themselves milling around in confusion, with some opting to leave as their travel plans hang in the balance. The situation remains tense as labor unions press on with their protest, further complicating the already beleaguered aviation industry. SK Blog will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
