Passenger Crushed to Death in Brutal Lagos Motor Park Clash
A sad incident unfolded in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday as a passenger was crushed to death during a violent clash between road transport workers and supporters of a local monarch. The confrontation erupted following the unveiling of a new motor park, allegedly established by the monarch to serve vehicles travelling to northern and eastern Nigeria.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions began to rise early Sunday when aggrieved members of the transport union, commonly known as agberos, opposed the new facility, seeing it as a threat to their revenue collection system. A resident identified as Shola told reporters that the presence of the Commissioner of Police at the park’s inauguration did little to quell unrest among the agberos, who viewed the development as undermining their influence in the area.
Chaos broke out when both factions clashed on Sunday morning, leading to a deadly turn. Amid the confusion, a passenger attempting to cross the road near the newly launched park was struck and killed instantly by a speeding vehicle. “They were chasing each other and fighting when the passenger was hit,” said another resident, Abbey.
Videos from the scene show a crowd of onlookers gathered around the body, with some residents using a wrapper to cover the deceased. The identity of the victim has yet to be confirmed.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident and said efforts were underway to resolve the dispute. “The CP was personally on the ground yesterday for an on-the-spot assessment and also met with all parties today at the command headquarters in Ikeja to find a lasting solution,” he said.
The incident marks yet another episode of violence linked to disputes involving transport workers in the state. Similar clashes in 2023 between commercial motorcyclists and union members in the Akute and Alagbole areas of Ogun State led to multiple fatalities.
