Paris Olympics: D’Tigress to Face US in Quarter-Final Showdown
D’Tigress, Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, will go head-to-head with the United States in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This marks a historic first appearance for Nigeria in the last eight of the Olympic basketball tournament.
Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress clinched their spot in the quarter-finals with a decisive 79-70 victory over Canada in their final group game on Sunday. The team initially topped Group B with five classification points, but a subsequent 79-72 win by Australia over France pushed Nigeria to third place in the group standings.
The anticipated quarter-final clash against the defending champions, the US, is scheduled for August 7 at 9:30 PM. This encounter will be the second Olympic meeting between the two teams; D’Tigress previously faced the US in their opening group game at the Tokyo Olympics, where they were defeated by a 9-point margin.
The teams also met in the 2024 Olympic qualifiers, with the US delivering a significant loss to the Nigerians.
In other quarter-final matchups, Serbia will take on Australia, Spain will compete against Belgium, and France will face Germany.
