Parents of Liverpool Winger Luis Diaz Kidnapped in Colombia; Mother Rescued, Father Still Missing

The parents of Liverpool’s talented Colombian winger, Luis Diaz, have been abducted in Colombia. On Saturday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed that Diaz’s mother was successfully rescued in Barrancas, located in the northern region of the country. However, the search continues for his father.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Petro shared the news, stating, “We continue in the search for the father.”

The Colombia Attorney General’s Office has been working relentlessly to address this distressing situation. They expressed, “From the moment the Attorney General’s Office learned of the kidnapping of the parents of the Colombian player Luis Diaz, in the Barrancas sector of La Guajira, a specialized team of prosecutors, police, and military personnel have been working to find the location of these people, clarify the facts, and find those responsible.”

According to local media reports, Luis Manuel Diaz and Cilenis Marulanda were abducted while at a service station in the La Guajira area, as armed individuals on motorcycles seized them.

General William Salamanca, the director of the police, swiftly mobilized intelligence agents and other police departments in the region to address the case. He stated, “The police are already involved, right now, in carrying out checkpoints, identifying people on motorbikes, private public service vehicles, for the recovery of the two kidnapped people, the father and mother of the footballer Luis Diaz.”

The governor of La Guajira, Diala Wilches, condemned the kidnapping and made a heartfelt appeal for their safe return, saying, “To the kidnappers, we demand that they return them immediately, safe and sound.”

Luis Diaz, the 26-year-old Liverpool and Colombian national team winger, has not made any public comments regarding this troubling incident. Diaz, who has represented Colombia 43 times, joined Liverpool from Porto last year. The club is scheduled to face Nottingham Forest in a Premier League match on Sunday, but the situation remains overshadowed by the distressing events surrounding Diaz’s family.
