Nigerian National Arrested in Colombia for Leading International Cocaine Trafficking Network

Colombian authorities have arrested Nigerian national Joseph Chinedu Okparaejesi at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá on charges related to drug trafficking, manufacturing, and possession of narcotics. Okparaejesi, also known as Alen, was apprehended while attempting to board a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, acting on a court order obtained by the country’s Attorney General’s Office.

According to officials, Okparaejesi is believed to be the leader of a transnational criminal network responsible for smuggling cocaine from Colombia to Europe, particularly Spain. The operation involved recruiting and preparing human couriers, purchasing double-bottom suitcases to hide the drugs, and coordinating the logistics to ensure successful transportation from Latin America to Europe.

A joint investigation by Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office, the National Police’s Dijin unit, and the FBI uncovered that Okparaejesi had been traveling throughout Latin America to expand and replicate the smuggling network. His role in the operation was confirmed after a courier attempting to travel to Madrid with concealed cocaine was intercepted at El Dorado airport.

Since the operation began, 15 individuals connected to the network—including couriers and other members—have been arrested. Okparaejesi has since pleaded guilty to all charges and, following a judicial order, will now serve a prison sentence. The Attorney General’s Office released details of the case as part of its ongoing effort to keep the public informed about efforts to combat international drug trafficking.
