Outrage in Turkey After Mosque Renamed ‘Victor Osimhen’ on Google Maps
Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen will play in Friday’s match against Karagumruk, despite being at the centre of a controversy over the renaming of a mosque in Konya. Osimhen, who missed the 3-0 win over Gaziantep on Saturday, was left out as he works to regain full fitness following his late arrival to pre-season after prolonged transfer talks from Napoli.
The dispute erupted when the Bulut Mosque appeared on Google Maps under the name “Victor Osimhen Mosque,” prompting strong criticism from local worshippers. Zeki Yaylacı, a member of the community, condemned the change, describing it as “a shame” and “an insult to Muslims, the mosque community, and mosques themselves.”
The renaming is believed to have resulted from incorrect user edits on the mapping platform, with no evidence suggesting Osimhen had any involvement.
