Promising Nigerian Basketball Player Dies After Collapsing in Training

The sports community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Nigerian basketball player, Israel Osamudiame Friday, during a training session in the Philippines.

Friday, a 19-year-old power forward, reportedly collapsed on Tuesday while training with his new team, the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Confirming the incident, Bo Perasol, Director of the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development, described the loss as heartbreaking.

“UP is heartbroken to confirm that one of our newest recruits, Israel Osamudiame, collapsed during practice yesterday. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital where, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he passed away,” Mr. Perasol said in a statement.

Originally from Abuja, Nigeria, Friday stood at 6 feet 10 inches and was widely regarded as a promising talent in collegiate basketball. He had recently transferred from Centro Escolar University (CEU), where he played for the Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League (UCAL).

Though ineligible to play immediately due to a one-year residency requirement, Friday was expected to make a significant impact in future seasons of the UAAP.

Witnesses said the young forward actively participated in drills at the Varsity Training Centre in Diliman before collapsing unexpectedly. Physical therapists attempted to revive him on the court before he was rushed to the hospital. The cause of death is yet to be determined as medical investigations are ongoing.

Perasol added that the university community is devastated and remains in close contact with Friday’s family.

“UP is in close contact with his family and is extending its full support during this difficult time. The university asks everyone to respect the privacy of his family as they grieve this tragic loss,” he said.

Friday would have celebrated his 20th birthday on September 6. His passing marks a painful loss not only for his family and teammates but also for the wider basketball fraternity, both in the Philippines and Nigeria.
