Asamoah Gyan Accuses Osimhen of Faking Injury in World Cup Qualifiers
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stirred controversy after accusing Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen of deliberately faking an injury during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Osimhen was sidelined for Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against South Africa on Tuesday after sustaining an ankle injury in the Super Eagles’ narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda last weekend. Following the match, his club Galatasaray confirmed he had suffered ankle ligament damage and returned to Turkey for treatment.
But Gyan has cast doubt on the legitimacy of the injury, suggesting the move was orchestrated to protect the 26-year-old ahead of Galatasaray’s upcoming Champions League campaign.
“I know these tricks,” Gyan claimed in an interview with habersarikirmizi. “Someone might have told Osimhen, ‘We’ve invested heavily in you. The Champions League is coming up. Go to Africa, play a bit, then go down injured and make it look serious. The next day, you’ll be back in Turkey.’”
The remarks have sparked debate among fans, with some backing Gyan’s skepticism and others defending Osimhen’s commitment to the Super Eagles.
