‘One-Chance’ Robbers Attack Another Nurse in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has raised concerns over a fresh attack on a nurse in Abuja by suspected “one-chance” robbers.

According to the association, the incident occurred after the nurse completed her afternoon shift at Wuse General Hospital. She had reportedly remained on duty beyond her closing time to assist a colleague in stabilising a critically ill patient in the Intensive Care Unit before the attack took place.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FCT NANNM Chairman, Dr. Jama D. Medan, condemned the assault and called for immediate action to improve security for healthcare workers across the territory.

He said the nurse was beaten and left with serious injuries. She is currently receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.

Medan said the incident has renewed fears among nurses who commute daily within Abuja. He referenced a previous case involving a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, describing it as a painful memory for members of the profession.

The association noted that nurses working in Wuse, Asokoro, Kubwa, Maitama, Kuje and Gwarinpa face growing security risks, particularly while travelling to and from work.

It called for a comprehensive investigation into the latest attack and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible. The group stressed that repeated assaults on healthcare workers are unacceptable and require urgent intervention.

The chairman also appealed to the FCT Minister to direct security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, to increase surveillance around hospitals and intensify patrols at bus stops considered vulnerable.

He warned that persistent insecurity is affecting morale within the nursing workforce and emphasised that healthcare professionals should not be exposed to danger in the course of their duties.
