OndoDecides2024: Yiaga Africa Observer Commends INEC on Logistics, Security
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received high praise for its logistical coordination in the ongoing Ondo State governorship election. A board member of Yiaga Africa, Professor Nnamdi Aduba, described INEC’s performance as above average, highlighting significant improvements over the Edo State governorship election held in September.
Speaking in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Professor Aduba noted that logistical challenges, such as late deployment of voting materials and election officials, which often mar electoral processes, were notably absent in the areas he monitored. He observed early arrival of materials and personnel at polling units across three Local Government Areas (LGAs)—Idanre, Ondo East, and Ondo West.
According to him, INEC’s preparations appeared well-organized, with vehicles deployed on time and a strategic focus on addressing the needs of distant LGAs first. “I will be surprised to hear later that they had logistic problems because the few [polling units] we visited seemed well-packaged, allowing vehicles to move on time. INEC deserves an above-average rating in logistics this time around,” he said.
Professor Aduba also drew comparisons with the Edo governorship election, where he observed significant disorderliness. He explained that in Ondo, INEC demonstrated better planning and coordination, ensuring smooth operations even in remote areas.
In addition to praising INEC’s logistics, Professor Aduba commended the deployment of security personnel. He highlighted the professional conduct of police, military, road safety officers, and civil defense officials, emphasizing their even distribution across the state rather than concentrating in urban areas alone. “What I appreciated most is the attitude of the security officials. Unlike past elections where irrelevant questioning and unprofessional behavior were common, the security personnel today were highly professional. I must commend the police for their conduct,” he said.
Professor Aduba also noted a gradual increase in voter turnout as the day progressed, though initial turnout was low. He further commended election officials for adhering to INEC’s guidelines, which contributed to the smooth conduct of the election in the areas he visited.
Comparing the overall coordination to previous elections, Professor Aduba remarked that the Ondo poll has set a promising benchmark for future elections in terms of logistics and security arrangements. While final reports on the election are still awaited, the improvements observed in Ondo are being viewed as a positive step forward for Nigeria’s electoral process.
