In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 21-year-old woman identified as Sukura Owodunni was allegedly set on fire by Pastor Taiwo Odebiyi during a deliverance prayer session at his Cherubim and Seraphim Maberu Parish located in Offin, Sagamu area of Ogun State.
The distressing event took place on August 17, 2023, when the young woman visited the church in response to the pastor’s invitation for a special prayer session.
Sources have revealed that Pastor Odebiyi instructed the victim to acquire certain items for the prayer session, including Amazing Grace perfume, local eggs, and a candle.
During the course of the prayer, it is reported that the pastor applied the perfume onto the young lady’s body and ignited the candle. Shockingly, almost immediately after the candle was lit, Sukura Owodunni burst into flames, resulting in severe burns to her chest, shoulder, and legs.
Eyewitnesses recount that law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene. The Divisional Police Officer in Adigbe, CSP Abdulfattah Ogunsanya, along with his team, took prompt action and apprehended the suspect without delay.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the unfortunate incident to our correspondent on Wednesday. She acknowledged that investigations have commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding this distressing case.
Following the incident, it has been reported that the victim was left to cover her own medical expenses. Sukura Owodunni is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.
SP Omolola Odutola further stated, “Our men have arrested the suspect. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the preliminary investigation is perfected.”
