“Obi Has 48 Hours to Leave Labour Party” – Abure-Led Faction Warns Over Coalition Move

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, asking him to resign his membership following his participation in a newly formed political coalition. The coalition, which includes the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is positioning itself as a platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Obi’s move has drawn strong criticism from the Abure-led Labour Party leadership. In a statement released Thursday in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh reaffirmed the party’s rejection of the coalition and denounced its members as self-serving political figures. According to Ifoh, the coalition is filled with recycled and frustrated politicians whose goal is personal gain rather than genuine national transformation.

He accused Obi of holding secret meetings with party members to persuade them to join his new political alliance, revealing that while some have declined, others have remained undecided. Ifoh stressed that any member found aligning with the coalition must resign from the Labour Party within 48 hours.

The statement emphasized that the Labour Party will not tolerate members with what it described as a “dual agenda” and warned against the practice of switching allegiances while claiming loyalty to the party. Ifoh said the so-called promise of a “new Nigeria” cannot be realized through an alliance of politicians responsible for the country’s longstanding challenges.

“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition,” Ifoh said, arguing that only the Labour Party is capable of delivering real change. He described members of the coalition as opportunists aiming to re-enter positions of power, and reiterated that the future belongs to the youth, not to political veterans clinging to influence.

He urged all Labour Party members to remain loyal and preserve the party’s structure as it prepares for future elections.
