Obasanjo: “I Met with South-East Governors, But Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Was Not Discussed”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has confirmed that his recent meeting with South-East governors in Enugu did not include discussions about the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This clarification came on Wednesday through a statement from his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

The statement was a response to a resolution by the regional governors, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to release Kanu.

Obasanjo emphasized that the meeting, which took place on Tuesday, focused on regional development issues, including security, infrastructure, economic collaboration, and complementing the national economic development agenda.

“The meeting with them was at my invitation and that of Chief Emeka Anyaoku before their summit began. The issue of Nnamdi Kanu was not on the agenda and was not discussed in my presence,” Obasanjo clarified.

The meeting, held at the Enugu State Government House, lasted six hours and concluded with a five-point communiqué signed by all five regional governors: Peter Mbah (Enugu), Alex Otti (Abia), Prof. Charles Soludo (Anambra), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Senator Hope Uzodimma (Imo). The communiqué outlined their collective decision to meet with President Tinubu to discuss securing Kanu’s release.
