NSCDC Arrests 5 Illegal Security Guards, Recovers Three Guns in Anambra

The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five suspected illegal security guards and recovered three pump-action guns in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area.

According to NSCDC Commandant Maku Olatunde, the arrests were made on Thursday, October 3, 2024, following a tip-off about an illegal roadblock where the suspects were extorting motorists. The suspects, all dressed in black T-shirts with “AVG Special Squad” inscribed on them, were apprehended by operatives from the Private Guard Company (PGC) Department in collaboration with the Nteje Vigilante Group.

In a statement signed by Okadigbo Edwin, Head of Media and Tactical Operations for the NSCDC Anambra State Command, the operation underscores the Corps’ commitment to eradicating impersonators and criminals masquerading as private security guards. The illegal roadblock, Edwin noted, was being used for extortion and could potentially lead to more serious crimes, including robbery, abduction, and even targeted killings.

The arrested suspects were identified as Ekene Erigaka (27), Emeka Eze (28), Ugoma Prosper (20), Obiuto Eze (42), and Victor Nnadi (34), hailing from different parts of the Southeast. Preliminary investigations revealed that their activities were causing significant hardship for local road users.

Commandant Olatunde emphasized the NSCDC’s determination to rid the state of criminal activities tied to unauthorized security outfits. “We will not tolerate unlicensed security outfits operating illegally. Those caught will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

He further praised the PGC Department for their swift action and encouraged the public to remain vigilant, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities involving private security personnel. Olatunde also reaffirmed the NSCDC’s role as the regulatory body responsible for licensing and monitoring private security companies, stressing the Corps’ commitment to addressing security challenges in Anambra and the country at large.

The arrested individuals will face prosecution in court.
