Northern Elders Forum Voices Alarming Concerns Over Judiciary’s Conduct
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed deep concerns about the current state of the country’s judiciary. In a statement released yesterday by its Convener, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, the NEF emphasized the imperative for the judiciary to exercise caution in its actions to prevent the erosion of its integrity, public trust, and confidence.
Prof. Abdullahi highlighted the potential consequences of these actions, referencing retired Supreme Court Justice Dattijo Mohammed’s valedictory remarks on corruption and undue compromises within the judiciary. Stressing the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary, he underlined its critical role in upholding the rule of law, protecting citizens’ rights, and preserving the credibility of the electoral process.
The NEF called on all levels of the judiciary to uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain impartiality in their decision-making processes. Prof. Abdullahi emphasized the need for judges to exhibit unwavering integrity, particularly in cases related to elections.
The statement underscored the judiciary’s crucial role in sustaining constitutional democracy by ensuring the rule of law, protecting individual rights, and providing checks and balances on the other branches of government. The NEF expressed concern that a failure to fulfill these responsibilities could have severe implications for the stability and functioning of a democratic society.
Moreover, the NEF warned that the current trend might encourage politicians to view politics as a do-or-die affair, leading to potential corruption, abuse of power, and a disregard for democratic principles. The erosion of trust in the judiciary was identified as a threat to democratic norms and values, ultimately undermining the legitimacy of the political system.
The NEF emphasized that a collapsing judiciary jeopardizes constitutionalism, the cornerstone of any democratic society. Without a functioning judiciary, there is a risk of unchecked constitutional violations, resulting in the erosion of citizens’ rights and freedoms.
The statement concluded by urging the judiciary to consider the consequences of its actions and decisions, striving to uphold the rule of law to justify the confidence reposed in it by Nigerians. The NEF called on the public to remain vigilant and expose any perceived misconduct on the part of the judiciary, emphasizing the belief that a strong and incorruptible judiciary is crucial for the development and progress of the nation. The NEF, alongside other stakeholders, committed to monitoring the conduct of the judiciary and advocating for its ethical revitalization to safeguard the interests of all Nigerians.
