North Central States Now Fully Governed by APC After Mutfwang Dumps PDP

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), solidifying the party’s control over the North Central geopolitical zone. The announcement was made by APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday. Yilwatda, who hails from Plateau State, said the defection marks a significant political milestone, with all North Central states now under APC leadership.

President Bola Tinubu presided over the caucus meeting, which also included six governors who recently defected from the PDP to the APC. The session commenced at 7:38 pm with the President’s arrival.

Earlier this week, Mutfwang’s Political Adviser, Istifanus Nwansat, had indicated that the governor was set to join the APC, pointing to internal crises within the PDP as a major factor. Nwansat described the APC as the “safest option” in light of the instability within the PDP and said the move would strategically align Plateau State with President Tinubu’s governance agenda.

The defection also follows calls from a coalition of PDP members across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas urging Mutfwang to switch parties. Christopher Danjem, the group’s leader, said the move was necessary for the state’s best interests, noting that closer alignment with the Federal Government could help attract more federal projects and enhance development initiatives. He cited recent federal responses to security challenges in Plateau, including a visit by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as evidence of the President’s commitment to the state.
