“Nobody Becomes a General Without Fighting Wars,” Jonathan Tells Fubara

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remain dedicated to the development of the state, despite facing opposition. Speaking at the inaugural Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture in Nihi, Etche Local Government Area, Jonathan emphasized that challenges faced by Fubara would ultimately strengthen his leadership skills.

Drawing a parallel to military leadership, Jonathan remarked, “Nobody becomes a general without fighting wars.” He encouraged Fubara to view the opposition’s attacks as preparation for greater responsibilities in politics, adding, “With your total commitment and the support I have seen from the people of Rivers State, God will surely see you through.”

The former president underscored Rivers State’s strategic importance to the nation’s economy, highlighting the region’s central role in the Niger Delta. He warned that unrest in Rivers could destabilize the entire region, adversely affecting Nigeria’s economy. “We want a peaceful Rivers because Rivers State is the center of the Niger Delta,” Jonathan stated. “Creating serious perturbation in Rivers State means creating a crisis in the Niger Delta, which is not good for our economy as a nation.”

Jonathan also urged calmness in political matters, advising leaders to focus on governance without succumbing to disputes over political power. “Allow those who are there to do their work. After that, anything can happen,” he said.

Governor Fubara, responding to Jonathan’s remarks, expressed gratitude for the former president’s unwavering support during the challenging periods of his administration. “When I was told that our Daddy (Dr. Jonathan) would be coming here, I canceled all other programs to receive him and honor him,” Fubara said. He praised Jonathan’s humility and commitment, describing the visit as a significant gesture for the people of Etche.
