Olanipekun Renews Call for Six-Year Single Term for President, Governors
Renowned legal luminary and former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), has reiterated his support for a six-year single term for the president and governors, advocating it as a pathway to stabilizing Nigeria’s governance structure. Speaking in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, during the 28th scholarship award and fifth empowerment programme under the Wole Olanipekun Scholarship Scheme, he emphasized the need for constitutional reform to address the nation’s challenges.
Olanipekun recalled that the NBA had proposed the six-year single term during his tenure as president of the association from 2002 to 2004. The proposal, which included a rotational presidency among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, was presented to then-President Olusegun Obasanjo but was ultimately rejected. The concept involved a framework where the vice president from the same geopolitical zone would take over if a president were unable to complete their term, ensuring continuity and regional balance.
He described the idea as a viable alternative to the current system, which he argued has contributed to political instability. Olanipekun stressed the importance of revisiting Nigeria’s constitution, stating that the existing framework does not adequately reflect the country’s realities or federal structure. He called for a homegrown constitution that better serves the nation’s diverse population.
Despite the recent rejection of a bill proposing the six-year single term by the House of Representatives, Olanipekun remains optimistic about the proposal’s potential. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and 33 other lawmakers, had aimed to address governance challenges but failed to gain traction. Undeterred, its sponsors have pledged to engage stakeholders for future reintroduction.
During the event, Olanipekun highlighted the importance of giving back to society, noting that his scholarship and empowerment initiatives were designed to uplift the less privileged. His foundation has provided scholarships to over 3,000 students and supported numerous widows, the elderly, and youths through various empowerment programs.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State lauded Olanipekun’s contributions, describing him as a beacon of hope and a pillar of support for the state and humanity. He acknowledged the lawyer’s selfless service, commending his efforts to improve the lives of the downtrodden. Oyebanji urged other Nigerians to emulate Olanipekun’s dedication to uplifting communities and fostering development.
In his remarks, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower people and promote societal growth. He praised Olanipekun’s enduring legacy, calling him a blessing not only to Ekiti State but to Nigeria and the world.
