NLC, TUC Serve 14-Day Nationwide Strike Notice to Tinubu Government

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly issued a 14-day strike notice to the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu. The unions expressed deep frustration with the government’s failure to implement a crucial 16-point agreement inked in October 2023.

This agreement, designed to mitigate the “massive suffering” caused by the surge in petrol prices and the devaluation of the naira, has been a point of contention. Both policies have been widely criticized for exacerbating economic hardships across the nation.

The NLC and TUC have sternly warned the Federal Government to fulfill its obligations under the October 2 agreement within the next 14 days, starting from Friday, February 9, 2024.

In a joint statement, the union leaders lamented the government’s apparent indifference to the widespread suffering and economic challenges faced by citizens. The statement emphasized that the October agreement aimed to address the severe socio-economic consequences of the IMF/World Bank-induced petrol price hike and naira devaluation, both of which have had dire implications for the masses and the Nigerian workforce.

Regretfully resorting to this drastic measure, the unions highlighted their commitment to ensuring industrial peace but emphasized that persistent neglect of citizen welfare and workers’ rights left them with no alternative. The unions stressed the urgency of the situation and the need to protect and defend the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens.

As the clock ticks down on the 14-day ultimatum, the nation awaits the government’s response and the potential implications of a nationwide strike.
