Nigeria’s 9mobile Officially Relaunches as T2
Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape witnessed a major shift as 9mobile officially rebranded to T2 during an event held on Friday at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos. This change follows the acquisition of a 95.5 percent stake in 9mobile by LH Telecommunication Limited last year, marking a new chapter in the company’s history.
The rebrand is the second since the company’s transition from Etisalat to 9mobile in 2017. Femi Gbadegbe, CEO of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), described the transformation as more than a simple change of name or logo. He framed it as a bold step toward becoming a more ambitious, customer-focused company that embraces technology as central to business, culture, and connectivity in Nigeria.
Gbadegbe emphasized the growing demands of Nigerian users for speed, access, and relevance, pointing to the vibrancy of the nation’s youth, entrepreneurs, startups, and SMEs as key drivers of this evolution. He portrayed the new brand as proudly Nigerian, embodying resilience and tenacity that reflects the spirit of the country. Despite past challenges, the company remains committed to emerging stronger and tackling the market’s evolving demands with renewed focus.
The event also featured remarks from Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, who applauded mobile network operators for their vital role in the country’s digital transformation. He highlighted the sector’s growth from under a million mobile lines in 2001 to over 220 million today, along with broadband penetration rising to nearly 50 percent. Tijani praised the industry’s bold investments—exceeding ₦75 billion in infrastructure including towers, fiber, and 5G—accomplished without government subsidies.
The minister welcomed T2’s rebranding as a strong indication of the company’s readiness to compete and innovate while contributing significantly to Nigeria’s goal of becoming a global digital powerhouse. He called on the company to use this fresh identity as a renewed pledge to service excellence and innovation for the millions of Nigerians who depend on their network daily. Tijani also assured ongoing government support for visionary and adaptive industry players like T2.
