“Nigerians Like People Who Play Them Wayo” – Wike Slams Peter Obi’s ‘Fake Humility’
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of political theatrics and pretense. Wike’s comments follow the circulation of a video showing Obi serving food at a charity event in Imo State.
Speaking in Benin City during the launch of modern transit buses by the Edo State government, Wike dismissed the act as insincere, arguing that it was a calculated move to gain public sympathy ahead of future elections.
“This is not where a presidential candidate should be, carrying food to serve. That is pretense. How long will he keep serving food?” Wike said. “As a presidential candidate, is that what we should be applauding and calling humility?”
He questioned why such gestures were not seen during Obi’s tenure as governor, implying that the former governor’s recent actions were politically motivated. “When he was governor, was he serving food? Now because elections are coming, he wants to serve — and you think that means humility?” Wike asked.
He also criticized campaign promises suggesting Obi would fly commercial planes if elected president, calling such claims unrealistic. “Who told you that’s humility? And somebody will tell you, ‘When I win, I’ll fly commercial,’ and you think he’s telling you the truth? Which security will allow that?” he added.
Wike ended his remarks with a pointed critique of the electorate: “We must tell ourselves the simple truth. Nigerians, you like people who play you wayo. You don’t like people who tell you the truth.”
