Nigerian Police Inspector Shoots Himself Dead
A police inspector, Ajele Oloyede, has reportedly taken his own life at a ceramics company in Igbesa, Ogun State, where he was posted as part of a security detail.
According to a report by Punch on Sunday, the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, March 13, and was discovered by another officer, Tolorunloju Stephen, from the Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos. Stephen had just returned from Ikeja around 1:20 p.m. when he found Oloyede resting his head on a table inside the company’s security office. When asked about his condition, Oloyede responded that he was fine.
Stephen then placed his bag and pistol on the table and stepped into the restroom. A gunshot was heard moments later. Upon rushing out, he found Inspector Oloyede lying in a pool of blood.
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and said the wounded officer was immediately rushed to Ota General Hospital with the assistance of private security personnel. He was later pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
Police officers who visited the scene recovered the deceased’s pistol, and his body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy. Odutola noted that the inspector’s family is being notified, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran for further investigation.
