Nigerian Music Stars Asake, Davido, Olamide, and Tems Shine on Obama’s Favourite Music of 2023 List
Former U.S. President Barack Obama has unveiled his diverse and global music playlist for 2023, showcasing his musical preferences and spotlighting Nigerian talent for the second time this year.
Released through his X handle, the curated list features acclaimed Nigerian artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, Asake, and Olamide. This marks the second occasion in 2023 that Nigerian musicians have found a place in Obama’s musical selection, with Arya Star and Burna Boy making the Summer playlists in July.
In a consistent trend, Nigerian musicians, including Tems, Burna Boy, Buju, and Pheelz, secured spots on Obama’s 2022 Summer Playlist. Burna Boy’s track “Anybody” and Rema’s “Iron Man” also made Obama’s summer playlist and favorite music list in 2019.
Notable entries on this year’s playlist include Davido’s “Unavailable,” a collaboration with Musa Keys, and Asake’s “Amapiano,” featuring Olamide. Burna Boy’s “Sittin’ On Top Of The World,” featuring 21 Savage, and Tems’ “Me & U” contribute to the rich compilation.
This recognition from Obama coincides with a significant year for Nigerian musicians, who garnered multiple nominations for the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards. Artists such as Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, Olamide, and Ayra Starr have further solidified their international acclaim with these nominations.
The continuous inclusion in Obama’s musical preferences and the recognition at the Grammy Awards underscore the success and influence of Nigerian artists on the global stage, making 2023 a remarkable year for the country’s vibrant music scene.
