Nigerian Man Jailed for 10 Years for Brutal R@pe in UK
A 35-year-old Nigerian man, Timilehin Olatunji, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the violent and sustained rape of a woman in Nottingham, United Kingdom.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, Olatunji carried out the attack at a property in the early hours of September 29, 2024. The victim managed to record the assault using an app on her phone before escaping and reporting the incident to the police. Olatunji, who was described as a “church-going pillar of the community,” was arrested shortly after.
Olatunji pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on January 15, 2025. In addition to his prison term, he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and given an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.
Judge Michael Auty, in his sentencing remarks, condemned the attack as “despicable and vile.” Addressing Olatunji, he said, “You were, for many years, a pillar of the community, a church-goer who helped others. But on September 29, last year, you raped a woman in the most brutal, sadistic, and cruel way imaginable. She screamed not just once but repeatedly for more than an hour. She even told you she was recording the attack, yet you did not stop.”
The prosecution, led by Dawn Pritchard, detailed how Olatunji assaulted the victim multiple times, first in a bedroom and then in a living room. The victim’s recording, which lasted 56 minutes, captured her screams and pleas for him to stop. At one point, she told him she could not breathe, to which he responded, “Are you begging?”
Following her escape, the victim provided the recording to the police, leading to Olatunji’s swift arrest. During the court proceedings, he wept throughout the hour-long hearing. His defense lawyer, Gareth Gimson, noted that his guilty plea spared the victim from testifying at trial. He also stated that Olatunji, who arrived in the UK from Nigeria in 2019, would face automatic deportation after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
Detective Constable Emily Bucklow of Nottinghamshire Police praised the victim for her bravery, stating that the recording was among the most harrowing evidence she had encountered in her policing career. She commended the victim for her strength during the investigation and court process, expressing hope that the sentencing would provide her with some closure.
Bucklow also urged other victims of sexual violence to come forward, assuring them that Nottinghamshire Police has dedicated officers ready to support and seek justice on their behalf.
