EFCC Detains Suspected ‘Internet Fraudster’ Over Killing of Operative in Anambra
A suspected internet fraudster has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after allegedly killing an operative during an arrest operation in Anambra State. The suspect reportedly opened fire on EFCC officials on Friday, resulting in the death of one operative and serious injury to another.
An EFCC official, speaking on the incident, confirmed that the slain officer was buried on Saturday in Sokoto. The suspect is currently in custody at the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu. The source described the incident as unfortunate and reflective of the increasing dangers associated with internet fraud.
Attempts to get a response from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful, as messages sent to his WhatsApp were delivered but went unanswered.
Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga stated that officers responded to a distress call at No. 1 Ekwutife Close, Ifite, where they arrested the suspect and recovered a pump-action gun. He confirmed that the EFCC operatives were on an investigative mission when they were attacked, leading to one fatality and another officer sustaining serious injuries.
Ikenga further stated that police have launched an investigation into the incident, assuring that updates will be provided as the case progresses.
