Nigeria Was Poor But Not Hungry — Now Nigerians Are Hungry Under Tinubu, Says Cardinal Onaiyekan
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, has expressed deep concern over rising hunger and hopelessness in Nigeria, urging the country’s leaders to prioritize the needs of the poor over economic statistics. Speaking during a homily at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Umuchima, Imo State, at an event marking Rev. Fr. Maurice Emelu’s 20th priestly ordination and 50th birthday, Onaiyekan lamented the worsening condition of ordinary Nigerians.
He noted that while Nigeria has always struggled with poverty, hunger has become a more alarming issue under the current administration. “15 to 20 years ago, Nigeria was poor but not hungry. Today, unfortunately, Nigerians are hungry,” he said.
Onaiyekan criticized the government’s emphasis on economic growth figures, calling instead for immediate action to ease the daily hardships faced by citizens. “This promise of a better future and, therefore, we should accept the difficulties around us is not acceptable,” he said. “Our politicians are talking of renewed hope, with little or nothing to sustain such hope, which for many has turned into hopelessness.”
He urged President Bola Tinubu to move beyond the advice of political aides and engage directly with struggling Nigerians. “President Bola Tinubu should not just listen to his advisers, but should come down and eat with the poor to feel their pains,” he added. Onaiyekan also called for stronger collaboration between the Church and government to improve public services and social welfare.
Also present at the celebration was the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who echoed the call for compassion and shared responsibility. He said Nigeria was undergoing a difficult time and emphasized the need for a more caring society. “This is the way we want our society to be, a society where people care for the needy. We want more of Fr. Maurice and individuals who care for the poor,” Obi said, as he joined others in serving food to guests.
