NGE Suspends Journalist for Publishing DSS Report, Breaching Confidentiality Agreement
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has suspended journalist Steve Osuji for publishing the contents of a confidential speech delivered by the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi. The Guild said Osuji violated the “off the record” provision in the Code of Ethics for Nigerian journalists by sharing details from the DSS chief’s keynote address, which had been agreed as not for publication during the NGE’s 25th Biennial National Convention held in Enugu.
In an official statement released on Friday by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild described Osuji’s actions as a serious act of professional misconduct. The body announced that he has been suspended from the Guild for one year, with immediate effect.
The NGE also extended a formal apology to the DSS Director-General and the institution he represents, expressing regret for the embarrassment caused by the unauthorized disclosure.
