Newly Married PoS Operator Electrocuted by Fallen High-Tension Cable in Anambra
A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a newly married Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator lost his life after being electrocuted by a fallen high-tension cable. Eyewitnesses reported that the victim was standing in front of his shop, located directly beneath the power line, when the cable suddenly snapped and struck him. A video circulating on social media shows the victim’s lifeless body with the live wire draped over it, still emitting smoke.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for caution around high-voltage infrastructure. Confirming the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Ossy Onuko, expressed deep sadness over the death and reiterated the dangers of conducting business or constructing buildings beneath high-tension lines.
“This is something we have been campaigning against,” Onuko stated, adding that such tragedies underline the importance of ACTDA’s ongoing sensitisation and enforcement efforts. He emphasized that trading or building beneath high-tension wires is not only illegal but amounts to a “suicide mission.”
He further noted that despite public criticism of ACTDA’s enforcement strategies, the agency’s actions are driven solely by concern for public safety. “No precious life is worth being lost to such a careless and avoidable death. A stitch in time saves nine,” he said.
