New Year’s Day Tragedy: SUV Rams Into Crowd, Killing 10, Injuring 30
New Orleans faced a devastating tragedy on New Year’s Day when an SUV plowed into a crowd in the French Quarter, killing 10 people and injuring 30 others. The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. local time in an area known for its vibrant nightlife, filled with bars, restaurants, and tourists.
According to NOLA Ready, the city’s disaster preparedness agency, 30 injured individuals were transported for medical treatment, and 10 fatalities were confirmed. Witnesses described the SUV speeding down the road and striking pedestrians indiscriminately. One bystander wrote on social media that the vehicle was “running people over.”
Following the crash, reports emerged of gunfire. A witness told CBS News that the driver exited the vehicle and began shooting at police, who returned fire. Scenes of chaos unfolded as multiple individuals lay injured on the ground. One eyewitness recounted seeing a truck slam into pedestrians, with one body hurtling toward him, while another reported hearing gunshots during the mayhem.
The New Orleans Police Department, supported by numerous paramedics, quickly responded, shutting down Bourbon Street to secure the area. The attack comes as the city was gearing up to host the annual Sugar Bowl, a major college football event that draws thousands of fans from across the United States.
This year’s Sugar Bowl, scheduled for Wednesday night, features the University of Georgia and the University of Notre Dame competing for a place in the College Football Playoff semifinals. The French Quarter, a hub of New Orleans culture and tourism, was bustling in preparation for the game before the tragedy struck.
