New Year’s Day Tragedy: Driver Who Rammed Truck into Crowd, Killing 10, Identified as Shamsuddin Jabbar; Incident Under Investigation as Terrorism
The driver who rammed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, an American citizen. Investigations revealed that Jabbar had an ISIS flag at the scene of the attack. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of 10 people and left about 30 others injured. Jabbar died after exchanging gunfire with police shortly after the attack.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed it is treating the event as a “terrorism act.” New Orleans police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the driver’s actions appeared to be deliberate, with Jabbar specifically targeting the crowd. “It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” Kirkpatrick said.
The attack took place at the busy intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, a time when large crowds typically fill the French Quarter. This tragic event follows a similar incident just days earlier, when a car rammed into a Christmas market in Germany, killing five and injuring over 200.
