NCC Opens Applications for 2023 Talent Hunt Research through Hackathon, Offers N10m Grant
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a significant step in advancing its Strategic Vision Plan 2023-2025 by launching the third edition of its Talent Hunt Research through Hackathon. This initiative aims to foster the growth of innovative technologies and home-grown content while stimulating sustainable economic development in Nigeria.
In a recent statement by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, the commission invited Tech Hubs and Innovation-Driven Enterprises (IDEs) across Nigeria to participate in the Talent Hunt Research program. The focus of this year’s Hackathon will revolve around Blockchain-enabled Data Protection Solutions, Assistive Technology for the Elderly and People with Disabilities, and Technology Solutions for Renewable Energy in Rural Areas.
The NCC’s Talent Hunt Research Through Hackathon utilizes emerging digital technologies to encourage the creation of innovative solutions and local content within the telecommunications sector. This endeavor aligns with the commission’s mission to drive economic growth and social progress in Nigeria by converting innovative ideas into practical hardware and software solutions that address industry and societal challenges.
Notably, the NCC has committed to awarding grants of N10 million each to the top three solutions, one from each of the thematic areas mentioned above. To participate in this competition, enterprises must meet specific eligibility criteria, including registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a clear problem statement, proposed solution, and deployment roadmap, among other requirements.
The NCC emphasized that all applications should be submitted online following the prescribed entry format, and there is no financial cost associated with participation. Furthermore, the commission assured that participants will retain full control and ownership of the intellectual property rights for the developed solutions.
To submit applications, Tech Hubs and Innovation-Driven Enterprises should provide a 4-page Executive summary of their project concept, a 3-5 minute video of the pilot project, contact information, passport photos, and profiles of team members, and the relevant website if available. The submission deadline for this competition is Friday, September 22, 2023.
The NCC has been running advertorials for the Hackathon for three weeks, and it encourages all stakeholders in the startup ecosystem to take note of the approaching application deadline.
