A woman, Busayo Olaibi, has dragged her husband, Olaide Olaibi, before Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, accusing him of irresponsibility, neglect and abandonment.
Busayo told the court his husband had frustrated her enough and therefore prayed the court to dissolve their union.
Olaide was absent in court despite being served court summonses.
Busayo in her testimony stated thus: “I met my husband in 2011 and dated till he requested that I moved in with him in 2013.
“My mother-in-law started pressurising me immediately I started living with my husband.
“She insisted that my husband would not carry out the normal marital rite on my behalf until I was pregnant.
“I was anxious and later became worried when I did not get pregnant in the early months of our marriage.
“I heaved a sigh of relief when I was confirmed pregnant at the hospital in the sixth month of our co-habiting.
“My husband, coming from a Muslim background, refused that we held our wedding ceremony in the church. According to him, his family members would never have anything to do with the church.
“We, therefore, carried out our marriage ceremony the Islamic way. We had Nikah.
“I had complications during pregnancy and was delivered of our baby in the 10th month.
“I was told I was shot in the spiritual realm after I bled profusely and was rushed to a quack doctor’s hospital.
“The doctor after examining me advised that a caesarean operation be carried out on me.
“The hospital did not have power supply, while the generator had packed up.
“The doctor operated me with the aid of a lamp and our baby was carried out of me.
“My mother in-law after I was discharged insisted that I sat on a potty filled with hot water, despite my complaint of discomfort and pain.
“The stitches on the area I was operated on, opened up and I called my mother’s in law attention to it, but she waved off my complaint and stated that the spot was healing.
“My relatives were alarmed when they saw the deteriorating state of my health when they paid me a visit.
“They were blunt in telling me that I stink and made arrangements to take me to a government owned hospital where I was operated upon three times.
“My family members rallied round me and gave their support morally and financially.
“My husband and his family on the other hand did not contribute a dime towards my treatment.
“My mother in-law, to my chagrin, complained that I wasted money going through the operations.
“I took ill at another time and had to sell my gold chain to procure treatment at the hospital, because my husband neglected me.
“I work round the clock to make ends meet since my husband refused to live up to his responsibility in the home.
“But my in-laws, believing that I had much money on me, turned me to their ATM machine.
“I helped my husband to borrow money from a cooperative bank, but he reneged in the payment agreement. I had no other option than to pay the debt.
“I bought a plot of land and had started raising a building on it before I got married to my husband.
“My mother in-law refused that I had rest of mind. She kept querying the source of my resources.
“I was notified of another plot of land which was available for sale and I encouraged my husband that he bought it.
“I lent him N350,000 out the total sum for its purchase, but my husband betrayed me.
“I was surprised at the speed he procured the documents of the land and this without my knowledge.
“But the shocking part of it all was that he registered these documents only in his name.
“He has not paid back N350,000 till date.
“His sister also borrowed N50,000 from me and has refused to make a refund.
“I stood as guarantor for my mother in-law when she wanted to obtain a loan of N300,000, but she refunded only N60,000.
“I was later arrested and disgraced by the finance bank I borrowed the money from.
“My husband is dubious and was in the habit of going through my phone.
“He once came across one of my customers who has relocated abroad and started giving me ideas on how I could dupe him.
“I was surprised at him and felt ashamed.
“At another time, he stated that I was beautiful and that I could lure my customers with my beauty with the intention of duping them.
“Olaide lied to his family members that I was dating other men and they stormed our apartment which was rented and furnished by me.
“They beat me to a pulp and went away with all my property.
“My husband deserted me and our child, and went with his family members.
“I spent a fortune treating myself in the hospital, while I became a source of ridicule in our compound and neighbourhood.
“I gathered resources to finish a flat in the building I am erecting and moved in.
“My husband is irresponsible and has always shirked his responsibility towards our only child.
“He contributes nothing towards his upkeep and education.
“Of recent, he took to denying paternity of our child.
“My lord, my husband has done a lot of damage to my life. I do not want to have anything to do with him again.
“I, therefore, beseech the court to dissolve our union and grant me custody of our child.
“I also pray the court to compel him to be responsible for our child’s upkeep giving his feeding, education and medical care upmost priority.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo after she has heard the plaintiff, adjourned the case till July 17, and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be served the defendant.
