MURIC Demands Ban on Controversial Nollywood Film
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a strong condemnation of a new Nollywood film, alleging it portrays Muslim women in a negative light. In a statement released on Thursday, MURIC Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola denounced the film, which features women in purdah involved in criminal activities such as bank robbery.
MURIC accuses the film of Islamophobia and claims it is designed to depict Muslim women as violent criminals, potentially inciting public hostility and ridicule against them. The group describes the film as “satanic,” “repugnant,” and “provocative,” alleging it is part of a broader campaign to undermine the wearing of hijabs and niqabs.
The statement criticizes the film’s portrayal of Muslim women and urges the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to investigate and impose an immediate ban. MURIC has also called for calm among the Nigerian Muslim community, urging them to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to let the authorities address the issue.
