Multiple Dead in Devastating Okija Junction Accident
A fatal road accident at Okija Junction in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday evening has claimed several lives, leaving the community in shock. The incident, which occurred along the busy Onitsha–Owerri expressway, drew a large crowd of distraught onlookers as news of the tragedy spread.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing, with multiple casualties and widespread grief. Although the exact number of victims has not yet been confirmed by authorities, the scale of the devastation has stirred deep sorrow among residents and commuters.
A video shared on X by user @ChuksEricE captured the aftermath, showing a mangled Toyota Hiace — a vehicle typically designed to carry up to 18 passengers — lodged precariously atop a road bridge, while bystanders expressed anguish over the loss of lives.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Margaret Onabe, confirmed the incident but said an official statement would be released once approved by her superior. “Yes, there was a fatal accident yesterday. I have written a report on that but am awaiting my boss’s approval,” she stated.
Okija Junction, a key transit point linking major towns and cities, has long been a vital yet accident-prone stretch of the state’s road network, with Thursday’s tragedy adding to growing concerns over road safety in the area.
