A Chief Superintendent of Police, identified as Kazeem Abonde, has been reportedly killed by motorcyclists during a clash with policemen in the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State.
It was reported that the policemen were carrying out enforcement of the “Lagos State ban on okadas” in the area when they were resisted by the riders.
The okada riders viciously protested against what they described as the seizure of their means of livelihood.
An eyewitness said “Everywhere is tense; we don’t know what exactly caused the fight, but we know that there was a confrontation between motorcyclists and the policemen attached to the Ajao Police Station,”
The situation was said to have degenerated into a clash which resulted in the death of Abonde, who was reportedly hacked to death.
On a video clip that has since gone viral, a voice is heard urging people to stay away from Ajao Estate because of the tension erupting from the fracas.
There are however conflicting reports as to whether the officers were from Ajao Police Station or were policemen attached to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, stated that his office is yet to be briefed on the incident. He however promised to react to the incident in due course.
