Minister Simon Lalong Faces Dilemma: Senate Seat or President Tinubu’s Cabinet?
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, a two-term governor of Plateau State, finds himself at a crossroads as he grapples with the decision to move to the Senate or maintain his position in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
Despite losing the February 25, 2023 election, Lalong successfully challenged the results at the tribunal, which ruled in his favor. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had initially declared Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner, but the tribunal’s decision was later upheld by the appeal court.
The court, led by Justice Elfaida Williams-Dawodu, declared the votes cast for the PDP candidate as unlawful and ordered INEC to withdraw Bali’s certificate of return, presenting a fresh one to Lalong.
Last month, Lalong, accompanied by associates, visited the INEC headquarters in Abuja to collect his certificate. In a video posted by the online TV platform Symfoni, Lalong addressed a crowd, expressing his uncertainty about the future.
He stated, “Each time I am with him (a comrade), he will remind me not to go to the Senate but to remain with us at the Ministry of Labour. Maybe that is not what my constituency will also say because, as I am now, I am a very confused man. Whether to go left or go right, pray for me to make the best decision.”
Lalong shared his hesitation about joining the Senate, emphasizing the importance of remaining true to his roots as a comrade. He cited concerns about potential shifts in ideology and the risk of “class suicide” for those entering the political realm.
As Lalong contemplates his political path, his decision holds significance not only for his political career but also for the dynamics within President Tinubu’s cabinet.
