Minister of Women Affairs Takes Legal Action Against Niger Speaker’s Plan to Marry Off 100 Orphans
Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has taken legal action against Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji of the Niger State Assembly, aiming to halt his plan to marry off 100 orphaned girls. Kennedy-Ohanenye has petitioned the Inspector General of Police and sought a court injunction to prevent the mass marriage, scheduled for May 24, which Sarkindaji proposed as part of his constituency project.
Sarkindaji’s initiative, intended to assist impoverished families affected by banditry in Mariga Local Government, has sparked controversy. Despite his pledge to cover bride prices and providing materials for the weddings, Kennedy-Ohanenye condemned the plan as a violation of the Child’s Right Act and an oversight of the girls’ futures.
Addressing reporters in Abuja, Kennedy-Ohanenye stressed the importance of protecting the girls’ rights and ensuring their education and empowerment. She highlighted the ministry’s commitment to educating and training the girls for sustainable livelihoods, emphasizing their right to choose when and whom to marry.
Kennedy-Ohanenye warned of legal consequences if Sarkindaji proceeds against the ministry’s directives, asserting the state’s obligation to safeguard every child’s rights from harm or exploitation under the Child Rights Act. The minister’s actions underscore the government’s stance on protecting vulnerable children and promoting their welfare.
