Military Operations in Abuja Lead to Arrest of 18 Suspected Terrorists
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the successful arrest of 18 suspected terrorists in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory. This significant operation took place on February 14, targeting individuals believed to be involved in violent extremism.
The AMAC, serving as the central hub of Nigeria’s capital, hosts key institutions such as the Presidential Villa, embassies, and various government and private entities. Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed the details during a press briefing in Abuja. He highlighted that the arrested suspects were found in possession of various items, including a bulletproof vest, charms, a substance suspected to be cannabis, and a sum of N9,000.00.
Maj. Gen. Buba reported on broader military activities, noting that between February 13 and 22, a total of 286 terrorists were neutralized, 244 arrested, and 122 kidnapped hostages rescued. The troops also recovered a substantial arsenal, including 587 assorted weapons and 7,943 ammunition rounds. The breakdown of confiscated items ranged from firearms, ammunition, explosives, to communication devices and vehicles.
In a parallel effort against oil theft, the military recovered crude oil worth N2.5 billion and apprehended 83 suspects involved in illegal activities. Operations in the Niger Delta area resulted in the destruction of 134 dugout pits, 79 boats, and 116 storage tanks associated with oil theft.
Maj. Gen. Buba stressed the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian military in combating terrorists and bandits. However, he emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of insurgency through good governance. Buba stated, “We must win this war by changing the conditions that make the insurgents willing to fight. We must also win the war by increasing support for the government at various levels through heart and mind projects indicative of good governance.”
This recent success follows the Defence Headquarters’ announcement in January, where troops killed 43 suspected terrorists and arrested 115 others in operations conducted during the first week of the year. The DHQ also highlighted that in the entirety of 2023, a total of 6,886 terrorists and suspected criminals were eliminated, while 6,970 were arrested.
