Metal Thieves Vandalize Government Schools in Abia, Steal Roofing Sheets

Umuahia, Abia State – In a troubling surge of vandalism, metal thieves have targeted several government schools in Abia State, according to Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Alex Otti. The thieves, commonly referred to as Ndi Akpakara, have made off with roofing sheets and iron windows from Mission Hill Urban School.

Ekeoma reported that in addition to the school thefts, manholes on the newly constructed Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard have also been compromised, with criminals removing and stealing their covers at night. This rampant theft not only threatens the state’s development but also endangers the safety of its residents, as exposed manholes pose significant risks.

“The actions of these criminal elements have resulted in serious consequences in various parts of the state. Innocent pedestrians have fallen into uncovered gutters during rain, leading to injuries and even fatalities,” Ekeoma stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

The government is actively working to improve public schools and restore vital infrastructure in the region. Ekeoma reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to creating conducive learning environments and will not tolerate acts that undermine these efforts. “We are determined to rebuild our public schools and ensure they are equipped with the necessary facilities for all students,” he said.

Ekeoma also warned that the state government is implementing measures to identify and apprehend those who aid or benefit from these criminal activities. He urged members of the public to report any instances of vandalism or theft of government property to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.
