Man Rescued After Alleged Attempt by Wife, Children to End His Life Over Retirement Funds
A man was rescued in the early hours of Thursday, March 13, by residents of the Oko-Filling community in Araromi, Ijoko, Sango Ota, after he was allegedly tied up, gagged, and left to die by his wife and children following a disagreement over his retirement benefits.
According to reports, the man had recently received his retirement payout and used part of the funds to open two shops for his wife in Abule, after giving her N3 million in cash. He also purchased a car worth N12 million for himself. The family already owned a house in the area.
However, his wife and their four university graduate sons were reportedly unhappy that he did not hand over the entire retirement package for them to manage. Tensions escalated, especially after the man sold the car he had just purchased, raising suspicions among neighbors.
A local landlord who spoke to *The Nation* said the man was found bound hand and foot, and gagged, inside his home. “He was tied like an animal to be slaughtered. They brought some Aboki men—about six of them—to do the job. It was the strange noise during their packing that alerted neighbors,” the landlord explained.
He said concerned landlords, disturbed by the commotion, approached the home and found a small bus (Korope) parked outside with the man’s wife and sons loading property into it. When questioned, their responses raised alarm. Residents then forced their way into the house and discovered the man bound, with the men allegedly hired to carry out the act still inside.
The victim was untied and rushed to the hospital, where he is still receiving treatment. The suspects—including the wife, children, and hired men—were taken into police custody. One of the hired men reportedly confessed that the wife contracted them for the job.
An audio message from Emmanuel Omola, chairman of the Anjomo Community Development Association, confirmed the incident. He stated that the wife had initially gone to the police to falsely report that her husband planned to kill her. When asked to provide transport for police to accompany her home, she left and never returned. Instead, she allegedly returned with hired men to restrain her husband.
Omola urged residents to take swift action when they hear unusual noises in their neighborhood. “If not for the quick response of the landlords, that man would have died. His penis is said to be swollen from the ordeal. Those of us who receive pensions must be careful with how we share the news with our families. It was this man’s pension that almost cost him his life,” he said.
