Man Dies During Passion of Christ Play Rehearsal in Cross River

A tragic incident occurred on Good Friday in Ugep, Cross River State, as a young actor, Michael Obeten, lost his life during a rehearsal for a Passion of Christ performance.

Obeten, a graduate of Mass Communication and an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, was reportedly coaching youths participating in the annual passion play when the accident happened. He had previously portrayed the role of Jesus Christ in the 2023 and 2024 editions of the event.

The incident took place at Station 12, a segment of the performance depicting the crucifixion. A locally made firework device, commonly used to simulate a thunder effect, malfunctioned during the rehearsal. The device discharged unexpectedly, and fragments struck Obeten in the head.

Witnesses said he collapsed immediately. Initial reactions suggested it might have been part of the act, but the presence of heavy bleeding from his head, nose, and mouth quickly revealed the seriousness of the situation.

At the time of the incident, Obeten was assisting with coordination, including handling microphones and supporting the performers.

The accident has left members of the church and the wider Ugep community in mourning throughout the Easter period.

The parish priest of Holy Cross Catholic Church declined to comment extensively on the incident, stating only that the situation had occurred and was beyond human control.
