Man Arrested for Killing Childhood Friend Who Returned From Europe for Housewarming

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Amadin William for the alleged killing of his childhood friend, Eghosa Osarietinomwan, who had returned from Europe for the Yuletide holiday.

The incident occurred on December 22 at Oben community in Edo State during a housewarming ceremony hosted by the deceased.

Confirming the arrest on Sunday in Benin City, the police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said Osarietinomwan had invited family members and friends to his residence shortly after arriving from Europe.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly lured the victim away from the gathering to a nearby bush path, where he attacked him with a machete.

ASP Ikoedem said the victim sustained deep machete wounds to the neck after stepping out of the celebration. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead.

Following the attack, the suspect reportedly fled the community and went into hiding. He was later tracked and arrested by police operatives in Benin City on December 27.

“The suspect, after committing the crime, absconded and went into hiding but was tracked and arrested,” the police spokesperson said.

The killing reportedly sparked anger among youths in the community, who allegedly set the suspect’s house on fire in retaliation. The police confirmed that two persons have been arrested in connection with the arson.

ASP Ikoedem said investigations are ongoing and assured that all those found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
