Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Mother with Axe Over Cassava Profits in Anambra

A 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother, Mrs. Dorathy Anyaji, and attempting to take his own life. The incident occurred around 1:40 PM on Friday in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, according to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Police officers from the Ekwulobia Divisional Headquarters reportedly responded swiftly to a distress call and apprehended the suspect at the scene. An axe believed to have been used in the crime was recovered during the arrest. Preliminary investigations suggest that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over proceeds from a cassava business. The suspect allegedly accused his mother of being dishonest about the earnings.

SP Ikenga confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody under close medical observation to prevent further self-harm and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

In a separate operation carried out the same day, operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu, raided a suspected drug den at Umuokpala Village in Orumba North Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, officers arrested 12 young men allegedly involved in the sale and use of illicit substances. Items recovered from the scene included various quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, other hard drugs, and other incriminating materials.

The suspects, all males aged between 20 and 29, were identified as Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack, and Nwazufu Kingsley. They, along with the recovered exhibits, have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
