LP Sets Up Disciplinary Panel to Probe Governor Alex Otti, Others Over Anti-Party Activities, Rejects Coalition
The Labour Party (LP) has announced the formation of a disciplinary committee to investigate Abia State Governor Alex Otti and several other party members over allegations of anti-party activities. The decision was revealed by the National Executive Council (NEC) led by National Chairman Julius Abure during a press briefing following the council’s meeting held at the party’s headquarters on Friday.
The committee, chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, has been given two weeks to investigate and present its findings. Other members of the committee include Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Barrister Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barrister Callistus Ihejiagwa.
In addition to the disciplinary action, the NEC used the meeting to reaffirm its support for the party leadership under Abure, celebrating the recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld the legitimacy of decisions made by the party’s recognized organs. Abure praised the judgment, noting that it affirms the authority of political parties and provides clarity on the party’s internal leadership matters.
The NEC also confirmed the validity of the party’s 2024 National Convention held in Nnewi, which it said followed all relevant legal and procedural guidelines, including those from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It reiterated confidence in the current National Working Committee (NWC), stating the leadership will continue to guide the party toward unity and electoral success.
Rejecting any talks of a coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections, the NEC declared that the Labour Party will stand independently and focus on strengthening its internal structures and expanding its support base. The council extended a call for reconciliation, urging aggrieved members to return to the fold in the interest of national development and party unity.
The NEC also congratulated Chief George Moghalu for emerging as the party’s candidate in the upcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, and called on the people of Anambra to support him for a better future in the state.
