#LiberiaDecides2023: Boakai Takes Lead Over Weah in Presidential Run-off
In a pivotal moment for Liberia, former Vice President Joseph Boakai, running as the Unity Party candidate, has surged ahead in the ongoing presidential run-off election, according to results announced by Liberia’s National Election Commission (NEC).
As the NEC continues the meticulous process of result announcement, Mr. Boakai currently commands 50.58% of the votes counted, securing 712,741 votes. Meanwhile, the incumbent Liberian president and Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate, George Weah, trails with 696,520 votes, representing 49.42% of the counted votes. Approximately 86% of the total votes cast have been accounted for.
This election marks Liberia’s fourth since the end of its civil war, and the run-off was necessitated after none of the initial 20 candidates in the first round managed to secure the required over 50% majority. The deciding round, held on Tuesday, has become a critical juncture for the nation’s political trajectory.
Weah, seeking re-election, faces a challenging bid amid corruption allegations that marred his first term despite promises to combat corruption. Boakai, his opponent, positions himself as a savior poised to rescue Liberia from the grip of mismanagement.
The unfolding results are closely watched by citizens and the international community, as Liberia inches towards a decision that will shape its leadership and future path. The NEC’s meticulous counting process is expected to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the nation’s political landscape.
