Liberians Choose Change: Joseph Boakai Poised for Victory as President Weah Faces Defeat

In a historic election, Liberians have decisively voted out President George Weah, a former football star, and current leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). The opposition candidate, Joseph Boakai, appears on course for victory, securing 50.89% of the votes, while President Weah trails with 49.11%.

The latest results, announced by the electoral commission on Friday, reveal a significant lead of over 28,000 votes for the 78-year-old political veteran, with nearly all ballots counted. This development has triggered jubilant celebrations in the capital, Monrovia.

Supporters of Joseph Boakai have flocked to his party’s headquarters in the city, expressing confidence in his impending triumph. Chants of “President Weah, go!” resonate among the crowd, accompanied by references to a campaign-associated song, “we beat the Buga dancer.”

As of the latest update, there have been no formal statements from either candidate. The electoral commission reports that results from 99.58% of polling stations have been declared. However, a polling station is set to undergo a re-run on Saturday, and discrepancies in results from 20 others are under investigation, according to Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the chairperson of the National Elections Commission.

Liberia, emerging from a history of civil war, is conducting its fourth election, marking a notable milestone in its political journey. Observers commend the nation for challenging traditional political norms, emphasizing the power of the people’s vote in shaping the future. A Nigerian resident in Liberia highlighted this shift, noting, “President George Weah was voted out of power, denied a second term because the masses decided. What a way of writing the future.”

As the nation awaits the official conclusion of the electoral process, Liberia stands as an example of the transformative potential of democratic expression in shaping the destiny of a nation.
