Malawi President Halts Foreign Travel for Self, Cabinet Amid Economic Turmoil
In response to the ongoing economic crisis, President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has taken decisive action by canceling all foreign trips for government officials, including himself. This move, announced in a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday night, aims to address the challenges faced by the Southern African nation’s economy.
President Chakwera emphasized the need for tough measures during this critical period and directed all ministers currently abroad on public-funded international trips to return to Malawi immediately. The suspension of foreign trips is set to remain in effect until March of next year.
In an effort to lead by example, President Chakwera announced the cancellation of his attendance at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai later this month. Acknowledging public concerns over frequent foreign travel, he expressed a commitment to curtail his own travel plans.
To further address the economic challenges, the President ordered a 50% reduction in fuel allocations for ministers, principal secretaries, directors, and senior officers entitled to such benefits. He strongly criticized the misuse of taxpayers’ money through unnecessary allowances and pledged to redirect the saved funds towards the procurement of food and fertilizer, ensuring food security in the country.
President Chakwera instructed the minister of finance to include provisions in the upcoming mid-year budget review to support small to medium enterprises, ensure a reasonable wage increase for civil servants, and reevaluate the Pay as You Earn tax to ease the burden on civil servants.
Additionally, the President directed the ministers of finance and trade to collaborate with the Competition and Fair-Trading Commission to investigate price increases, holding accountable those involved in violating the law by raising prices.
In response to the recent hike in water prices, President Chakwera ordered the secretary to the President and Cabinet to absorb the cost within the operating budget of relevant boards, sparing Malawians from additional financial strain for the time being.
These austerity measures, as outlined by President Chakwera, reflect a comprehensive approach to addressing the economic challenges faced by Malawi and demonstrate a commitment to responsible financial management during this critical period.
